Open House Essen is a vibrant annual festival that invites the public to explore the city's most iconic and hidden architectural gems. With a focus on promoting architectural knowledge and cultural engagement, the event offers unique access to buildings that are often not open to the public, showcasing the diverse history and modernity of Essen’s urban landscape.
This local initiative is part of the wider Open House Worldwide network, a global movement that began in London and now spans multiple cities across Europe and beyond. Open House Europe connects these cities, fostering a shared commitment to architectural education and public access. Open House Essen aligns with this mission by celebrating both local heritage and contemporary design.
Since 2023, I have had the pleasure of overseeing the visual identity of the festival as a designer. Through this role, I work to ensure that the visual elements of the event reflect the innovative spirit of the city’s architecture while making it accessible and engaging for all visitors.

Theme
For each year of the project, Open House Europe is dedicating a specific Annual Theme: ‘Building Futures Together’, ‘Accessibility and Inclusion’ and ‘Future Heritage’. The selected themes unfold through the engagement of audiences and education about exceptional examples of architecture and urban environments. A thematic focus contributes to shaping a greater agenda for a debate about contemporary and heritage architecture, their values and future.
